Best album of the year? Without question it is The Life of Pablo.
Best film of the year? With a storyline that included breaking down stereotypes and combating violence perpetuated by the state, Zootopia was a very timely animated feature. I felt that Disney's story of two juxtaposed characters unlearning biases about each other was an elegant way to help children (and adults) understand the importance of movements like Black Lives Matter. I was really impressed by the way the film handled the reality of prejudice.
What's been the best and/or worst thing about 2016? The best thing about 2016 is that it only lasted 365 days. It has been a rollercoaster both in my personal life and in the global sense. But the actual best part of 2016 has been the music. With musical blessings from Kanye West, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Gucci Mane, Chance the Rapper, Rae Sremmurd, Solange, and Frank Ocean music has been the saving grace of this tumultuous year. The worst thing about 2016: Bigotry got bolder in 2016. I say it got bolder because it's always been here but it got louder and bolder for sure; just look at Brexit in the UK or Donald Trump in the US.
What is love? Community is love. When I was arrested in July, the only thing that kept me hopeful was the outpouring of love I felt from the community around me. Lisa Batiste, a perfect stranger gave refuge to hundreds of protesters on her lawn, she didn't know me but she allowed me into her house to use the restroom. It takes selflessness and love for humanity to do those things. She saved countless people from being hurt or arrested while still preserving our liberty to peacefully assemble.
What would you like to see happen in 2017? Immediate and unencumbered liberation for all marginalized people.
